The One thing You Should do Every Single Morning

What’s the first thing you do when you open your eyes in the morning? What do you think? What do you say? How do you feel? Do you even know? Are you even aware of the thoughts that pass through your mind?⠀

One of the first things I do when I wake up is find something—anything—that I can appreciate. My comfortable bed. The fact that I slept. An inner, eager anticipation for that first sip of coffee. Then, I say: “Today’s going to be a wonderful day.” And I mean it.

Our first few awakened moments set the course for our entire day. If we’re intentional—if we choose thoughts that make us feel good—it will set us up for a good-feeling day. If we intend to look for positive things, we’ll find more positive things. If we decide that we want to have a wonderful day, we’ll find more moments that make us feel wonderful. ⠀

Life is all about perspective. It’s about attention and focus. What parts we choose to emphasize and how we choose to perceive everything that we experience.⠀

This doesn’t mean that we’ll never experience negative thoughts, feelings, or emotions. Sometimes, no matter how much we want to look for the good, move toward joy, or bask in the wonderful, life happens. Our emotions run away from us. We feel tired, or cranky, or irritable, and for some reason, we just can’t shake it. No matter how much we want to. No matter how hard we try. It’s ok. It’s natural. It happens to all of us.⠀

But, as long as we hold the intention to operate from a space of lightness, we’ll experience our experiences with as much lightness as possible. We’ll choose to look for the positive. We’ll emphasize the opportunity. We’ll make the best out of whatever comes into our life experience.⠀

If we can’t totally shake a bad mood, we can at least see what we can learn from it. Can we still be patient, kind, and loving toward others when we don’t feel our best? Can we stay present and mindful? Can we let ourselves feel whatever uncomfortable emotions are bubbling inside of us, while simultaneously reaching for whatever we can to feel better?⠀

Life is all about perspective and intention.⠀
